Postpartum Hair Loss?

Many of my ‘soon to be Mama’ clients have been asking me about hair loss post birth. It’s true, It does happen to a lot of women. Personally, I didn’t experience hair loss with my first pregnancy but I did with my second pregnancy. The good news is it eventually grows back. Yes, It can be a little scary and maybe even make you feel a little insecure. Here’s whats going on with your body post birth and why it may effect your locks.

The increased levels of hormones during pregnancy actually cause many women to retain more hairs than usual, due to disruption of the hair growth cycle. This is where the stereotypical image of a pregnant woman developing fuller, glossier hair comes from.

However, the reduced shedding during pregnancy often results in excessive shedding after a baby is born, as the body regulates its hormone levels and hair shedding catches up.

What can feel like extreme hair loss after pregnancy is nothing to be alarmed at, unless you feel that your hair isn’t re-growing in its pre-pregnancy condition.

Understanding Postpartum Hair Loss

Though hair loss after birth can be a shock, it is a common part of the body’s return to its normal cycle.

  • This process peaks around 2-4 months after giving birth.

  • It’s important to continue a healthy diet to support healthy hair regrowth.

  • Speak to your doctor if you have any concerns.

Bottom line, if you have some shedding post delivery, give yourself a little grace and know that you are not the only one.
